This week’s question is a good one. Let’s have a look:

Question: How many different ways are there to draw a hand of five cards, in a game of poker, that consists of an ace, a two, a three, a four, and a five of any suit?

Answer: Actually, the above answers are incorrect.

We have 5 cards and 4 suits.

Let's, say we draw the cards in the following order:
Ace, 2,3,4,5

There are 4 suits. So there 4 ways we could draw an Ace first; 4 ways we could draw a 2, 2nd, etc. And so there are 4×4x4×4x4 = 1024 ways of drawing the cards in the above order. However the cards can be drawn in any order, so we have to multipy 1024 by the number of ways the five cards could be ordered when they are drawn. The number of ways the 5 cards could be ordered is 5 factorial (i.e 5!) = 5×4x3×2x1=120. So the number of ways of drawing a hand consisting of the 5 specified cards, in any suit and in any order = 1024×120 = 122,880

Answer: There are only 4 different ways to have a royal flush.

Question: I'm looking for detailed statistics beyond simply what hand beats what with what flop.

I want to see stats on topics like the following:

After a raise on the turn with a board of 76TJ what hand has most commonly been second best in a showdown? WHat did it lose to? Etc

Anyone know of any places that have those stats?

I Have Around 500 Dollars and Need a Computer What Should I Get?

A tough poker hands question this week. Let’s dive straight in

Question: I'm looking for a computer and I have around 500 dollars. I would like a Flat screen and use my computer mostly for bills online and for blogs and listing to music. My husband on the other hand is into gaming poker/tycoon type games not huge games but we currently have a computer with major clowing down I think there are things that are just starting to disappear. So I think I have a virus or something.

But we would love to get better games for the computer and have a fast computer but as i said can only go around 500 dollars. Thanks.

Answer: Try looking at HP (or compaq- same company) or Dell. You can get a decent one from them for around $500, give or take a little. You can also go to a place like walmart and buy one for about the same price. If you buy one online, just be sure it comes with everything you want (like the monitor).

This week’s question is a good one. Let’s have a look:

Question: A poker hand consists of 5 cards dealt from an ordinary deck of 72 playing cards.

(a). How many poker hands are possible?
(b). How many different hands consisting of three kings and two queens are possible?
(c). The hand in part(b) is an example of a full house: 3 cards of one denomination and 2 of another. How many different houses are possible?
(d). Calculate the probability of being dealt a full house?
oops its 52 cards!!

Answer: I hope you mean 52 cards.

Anyway, to figure out this problem, you would need to find the number of combinations of 5 taken from 52. The equation for that is:
52!/(52-5)!5!
This is equal to 52!/47!5!
Which is equal to: (48×49x50×51x52)/(2×3x4×5)
There are a total of 2,598,960 poker hands.

It's best to find the number of ways to get three kings, then two queens, then to multiply the two.
There are four possible kings and combinations of three.
4!/(4-3)!3! This equals 4.

4!/(4-2)!2! This equals 6.
6×4=24
There are 24 possibilities of three kings and two queens.

(c) is a little harder to explain. For every card Ace thru King there are 12 other cards it could make a full house with. The king can make 24 with a queen, but it can also make 24 with ace, two, three, four etc. To find the total number one must multiply 24 by 12. This equals 288. Now we must multiply that number by the total number of different kinds of cards in the deck. That would be 13. 288×13 = 3,744.

There are 3,744 ways to make a full house.

To find the probability, one must use the answer from question (a) and put the answer to question (c) over it.

3744/2598960 =

6/4165.

Or an approximately 0.144 % chance of being dealt a full house.

Question: I am a married female. My husband and I are mutual friends with another married couple. I work with both parties of the other couple, so I see them every day and we are relatively close friends. The male friend , who is also friends with my husband, is really big into Texas Hold 'Em Poker. I was at a dollar store one day and saw a neat poker coffee mug. I picked it up for him and gave it to him in front of his wife, just because, not as a gift. And again, it was only $1.00 Now, she, on the other hand, became extremely upset. She told everyone we work with how I was trying to steal her man by buying him presents. And again. It was only a mug that cost $ 1.00 This caused drama for about a week. My husband knew that I picked up the mug for the guy and was fine with it. I didn't see a big deal with doing something nice for a friend. AM I IN THE WRONG HERE???

Answer: It sounds like his wife is insecure, and afraid that she can lose her man at the drop of a hat, or in this case, a poker mug.
You were in no way wrong for your gift, it may have only been one dollar, but the point is that you thought of this person enough to grab it off the shelf at the sight of it.
Explain to his wife how hard it is to find good married people to hang out with, and how you were only trying to express your cloiseness to both of them.

Question: I have played the game Trivial Persuit ( Genus Edition) and have looked up in the AINSLIE'S COMPLETE HOYLE edition copyright of 1975 and wish to know the correct answer.
