Another poker question has come in this week. Let’s tackle it straight away:
Question: At a local casino in Luton/London OR for micro stakes on a computer ? I have studied a fair amount of Texas Hold em, watched tv poker and listened to experts. But i have only played silly play money poker which is meaningless. How much cash do i need to open up an account and play for real?
Also i am poor at maths and the concepts of implied odds and calculating odds are way beyond me, i have zero intelligence but can read betting patterns and behaviour.

You are much better off playing online at the micro stakes. You cannot lose much playing at the micro stakes plus you learn much quicker playng online because you see so many more hands than you do at a casino. The minimun amount of deposit varies depending on site and method of deposit but at most places the minimum deposit is just $10 to $20. Beings that you are from Europe you may want to check out BetMost Poker (of the Ipoker Network). It is one of the top European online poker rooms. They have a good sign-up bonus as well as sponsorship/rakeback program. Read more on BetMost Poker here: http://www.areyouapokerfish.com/betmostpoker.html
I checked PokerStars and they have a $10 minimum deposit. Read more on PokerStars here: http://www.areyouapokerfish.com/pokerstars.html

I agree that micro stakes will be a great way to start. As long as you’re disciplined, you could get 2 years worth of live play experience in just a matter of a couple months.
You don’t have to be great at math, but you should at least UNDERSTAND the concepts behind express and implied odds. Read a book or read some articles. You really MUST understand the basics of these concepts - you don’t have to be a genius at them.

Micro stakes like they said.
Plus you don’t have to be a math whiz, you can just memorize the odds, that’s what I did. On an index card make a table of Outs vs Required Odds. Whenever you play, refer to the card, until eventually you won’t need the card. For instance when I look at my card next to "8 outs" it says 1/4, meaning if the pot is 40 and someone bets 10, I can call. Or if they bet 20 and I think I have at least $40 in implied odds (meaning the call will earn me $80 when all is said and done), I can call.
(If you follow that suggestion, you have to decide how you want your odds. Instead of 1/4, it could say "3 to 1". Or instead of counting the pot BEFORE their bet, you could say the pot AFTER his bet is $50. However you wanna think of it.)
Once you advance a few levels in stakes, you’re gonna need to be making the correct mathematical plays one way or another, because most of your opponents will be. And yes there’s software but then you’re stuck if you ever wanna take your game to the live tables.
