This week’s question is a good one. Let’s have a look:
Question: I’ve been grinding HU SnGs for the last six months, while studying the game seriously, and I just can’t do it anymore. The sick thing is that I’m winning and cashing out weekly, but the thought of playing makes me queasy. I just don’t know how people can do this for a living and high stakes at that.
What are your experiences?
Answer: That happened to me towards the beginning of 2010 but I had been playing a lot both online and games around the city for about 5 years solid. I know where you are coming from because I too was playing well and I definitely got tired of it. I stopped going to the main live game I had been going to twice a week for 3 years. Fatigue of sitting there for hours until the early morning started to get to me and the fact I was only playing about 10-20% of the hands an hour that I was playing online was boring me. At that time I decided to just play online but I just became tired of playing all together so I took a few months break. It really did me good as I can honestly say I wasn’t thinking about playing at all and kept fairly busy doing other things. When I began to play again I was refreshed you could say and had a very good first month. I have just been online now, it has cut my playing hours down considerably and I am enjoying that a lot more……………………………………….

Take a break, while you’re on that break watch a few films about Poker. Get inspired again.

OK, so here’s where every poker pro who reads these forums will probably give me "Thumbs Down" and hate me for what I say. I’ll still say it anyway.
Perhaps you’re realizing that there should be more coming from your life than just playing poker. Seriously - what are poker players contributing to society? Basically, they are leaches off society! Essentially they are preying off the misery of others.
Maybe you feel you should be doing something more with your life. Maybe you realize that with your sort of drive to DO something, you could be making a real difference in this world.
I KNOW tons of folks aren’t going to agree with me. Some will even give me the "Barry Greenstein Argument" and tell me how he and many other poker players donate a big portion of their winnings to charities. To them I would say that just because you donate money to charity doesn’t mean you are contributing to society. If a drug dealer were to donate half his profits to charity, would that mean he is contributing to society? I’d say no!
To be clear, I’m not equating poker players to drug dealers. Poker players aren’t hurting people directly. I’m just saying the do nothing to improve our society. I would say the same about many other professions, too. There are white collar workers making lots of money who get burnt out because they have no satisfaction in their jobs. I’m just saying that maybe you are experiencing what they experience. Maybe you want more for your life.
