A poker question that should definitely interest you all this week

Question: I’m just trying to find out if playing poker / card schools - are allowed in pubs and social clubs. I’m specifically concerned about a club that I use…… a great club and great, good and nice genuine people, but I’m concerned that we may lose the entire licence - and therefore have to close our club if the poker players are approached by the police.

Does anyone know where the law stands on this? Would we ever be bothered by the police about it? Or am I just fussing needlessly. I don’t want to ask the others in the club, because I don’t want to upset anyone as they are all nice people.

Any advice on the matter would be most welcome, thanks.

Answer: 1. Generally, gaming is not allowed in places to which the public have access. However, it is possible that a specific pub has been licensed for gaming. It is worth checking with the landlord should you want to play.

2. If gaming has been authorised in a particular place, no charge may be made (in money or money’s worth) for playing, entrance or otherwise. In addition, no levy or tax may be charged on any of the stakes or on the winnings of any of the players, whether as a direct payment or deduction. This would include the exchange of tokens or tickets at a lower rate than the rate at which they were issued, or by any other means.
