This week’s question is a good one. Let’s have a look:

Question: Well I know it can be true, but is it true you can basically make unlimited money - and lose unlimited money in poker? You can maybe make 1 billion dollars and lose 500 million the next hand?
Answer: In any gamble you can lose everything and win everything, there’s no 100% certainty to any single outcome. This is why good poker players, succesful gamblers, casino’s and bookies only bet a small amount of their bankroll at a time to account for variance. So if a profitable poker player is playing $500m at a time, he probably has a bankroll of atleast $25 billion, don’t think anyone plays these stakes though. I play poker and if I had $400 and played one single game for $400 theres a good chance i’d lose it, now if instead I played 40 games for $10 theres an almost certain chance that i will have a profit, usually around the $120 upon completion. So by playing lots of games for a smaller stake one can almost completely eliminate any luck factor. So whether proffesional poker players win $1m one week and down $5m the next, they will always end up with the money at the end of the year.

You cannot make unlimited money, only the amount that others bring to the table. It doesn’t matter if you sit down at the table with a billion dollars, if everyone else is only buying in for a hundred bucks than the most you can win is $900. You can, however, lose an unlimited amount when playing no limit games. You just can’t lose it all at once. In the above example you could only lose as much as another player had in front of him. $100 in the first hand, $200 in the second, $400 in the third, etc. The difficult part would be finding other people to play with you at those stakes. But, theoretically, it could be done.

If people are playing no limit hold em with 500 million dollars each, I suppose that’s possible.

Certainly, you cannot lose unlimited money in poker or in anything. You can lose what you have (borrowed or earned). At some point, you will literally have nothing left to lose.

Poker teaches one great life lesson: whoever goes broke first, lose the game. So whatever you do, don’t go broke.
