A tough poker question this week. Let’s dive straight in

Question: I have been playing for quite a while now but would like a good read but there are so many to chose from. Anyone out there who can suggest something to me?
Answer: Reading is fun but it is hard to understand concepts unless you see them. My advice to you is to get a trial membership at a poker training website like deuces cracked and download as much videos as you can during the trial period. This way you can see why and how players who have made 100k last year did it! Best of luck to you!

I’d highly recommend David Sklansky’s "No Limit Hold ‘em: Theory and Practice".

Below is an Amazon link. (I have nothing to do with Amazon.)

I read Doyle Brunson’s and I think that was a great investment.
It’s difficult to read books by the pros because they teach you THEIR way of playing…and that’s not everyone’s way of playing.
If you have been playing a while, your BEST way to play is to continue playing and see as many hands as you can. Most the interview’s with the professionals say they just played online for hours end and then played as much as they can.
More info is listed below for additional info but hopefully this helped.

I would recommend the Harrington books on Hold Em, there’s 3 of them and they are well worth the investment. Also Poker Mindset is a great book which deals with the mental side of poker rather than how to play poker, again a great read.

Assuming you play Hold ‘em I suggest the following books…

    Skalansky’s Theory of Poker
Negreanu’s Power Poker Strategy (similar in structure to Brunson’s Super System, but just on Hold’em)
    Harrington’s series

    Have Fun!

The best poker authors (in my opinion) are David Sklansky and Dan Harrington.

They do the best job giving examples and explaining theory and strategy.

    Sklansky’s best:
    1. The Theory of poker
    2. Small Stakes Holdem

    Harrington’s Best:
Harrington on cash games vol 1
harring ton on tournaments vol 1

I know you’re talking about books but I wanted to suggest that you also watch High Stakes Poker because you can learn a lot of great strategy from the announcer Gabe Kaplan who is himself a good poker player.

In my opinion High Stakes Poker is the only poker show that will truly teach you strategy and help you in your game. Kaplan explains and understands almost exactly what is going on in the players heads and why they are making the moves that they are.

In my opinion, you don’t actually need to buy a book to be good at poker. You can read articles online. What you need to do is practice online to enhance your strategies.

books are all well and good, but the game has moved on, and is changing constantly, some great players have never read a poker book in their life, some have no idea of how to calculate probabilities and play purely on ‘feel’
doyle brunson says that he is still learning poker to this day
i have found watching ‘high stakes poker’ very educational, the pros play the player a lot more than they play their cards
a lot of the books mentioned are quite old now
lots of good tips from the pros in youtube
are you playing live or online, hold em or omaha or razz etc, cash or tournaments, how many players
    fully dissect your game
play within your limits (5 - 10% of bankroll in any one game)
ask yourself why did he re-raise me all in on THAT flop and then fold your aces knowing you made the right decision
