First you've gotta decide which game you want to play. I'm guessing No Limit Hold 'em (which is as different from Limit as Checkers is to Backgammon). Either way,
Required reading is as follows:
Super System by Doyle Brunson
Small Stakes Hold 'em by David Sklansky
The Theory of Poker by David Sklansky
Start with these.
Also, read Cardplayer magazine religiously.
Tremendous help can be found at the following forums on the internet:
http://www.fullcontactpoker.com
http://www.twoplustwo.com
Also, get a free account at fulltiltpoker.com, even if you decide not to play there, several times a week you will get emails with "Tips from the Pros." These are absolute gold.
Pretty soon you'll be throwing around terms like +EV and "fold equity."
Good Luck.
