There’s a saying "fold it and forget it". If a fold is good, it’s good no matter what cards come out afterward. Poker isn’t about psychic ability, it’s about percentages. If you only have a gutshot and someone makes a pot-sized bet, any good player would fold (unless they wanted to bluff or had unbelievable implied odds). Why regret things that are out of your control. Or do you really expect yourself to be predicting cards?

First, you should be folding bad hands preflop. What happens after the flop is immaterial. You are supposed to fold bad hands because they have a poor chance of winning. You keep good hands because they have a better chance of winning. So, if you are folding garbage, you are doing exactly the right thing. Good start!!!

Now — how to get better. There are a lot of very good poker books out there these days, with everything from basic beginner strategy up to very advanced strategy for math geeks. Get a couple of books. Try out — slowly — each of the priciples in each book. Learn about position, value bets, aggression, reading other players, all the stuff that you will need to get better.

There are also poker forums that have a lot of advice about how to play. 2+2, Cardschat, Railbirds — and many more — have a lot of advice columns and blogs that can help you improve. Many forums also hold private low-cost tournaments that can help you become more comfortable playing — and you would be playing against people who are also interested in poker and who may not play altogether stupidly.

PokerStars has a lot of freerolls that you can use to improve your game. If you can last to cash in a freeroll, you are starting to get the hang of it.

And — for you — don’t worry about how any particular hand turns out. The goal is to make the best play on each hand, the correct play which will likely win you the most or lose you the least possible amount — not necessarily on that particular hand but as a whole given each of the times you are likely to be in that situation. Poker is a long-run game with slight edges, not a short-run get-rich-quick game. Your sense of how to play a hand will become refined again and again as you study and gain experience.

    Good luck!
