This week’s question is as follows:
Question: I watch poker on t.v. and can’t seem to figure out what the need for both chips and cash are in play. hmmmm….
Answer: It might High Stakes Poker-which is a cash game or it might be Poker After Dark on NBC which is usually a tournament and they use cash as well. The use of cash is most likely for dramatic affects-seeing thousands of dollars in cash is more exciting than seeing one chip for the same amount.

i’ve never once seen cash on the table until its the final 2 on the final table, then they bust out the fat wads all over the table…oo man how nice. The Winners Money.

i have never seen money on a tv tournament… but if a player has money next to his chips, its like a back up in case he runs out of chips. he can play up to all the money that is on the table at the start of the hand.. usually players just keep money there to buy more chips if they need it… but they can also play the money if they have it on the table before that hand is dealt… they can’t reach into their pocket for more during that hand… only after the hand can they put more money on the table.

the tv programme you are properly on about is high stakes poker, which is a cash game not a tournament. for this the players use there own money, they will swap some for chips but also have there cash on table as well. and when its there own cash its easier to have cash as well.

Mostly because it looks better for TV. It adds a bit more drama to have 10k in cash rather then a 10k chip.
